Annual Boo Bingo Charity Event

In collaboration with the Veterans Group of Alameda, we hosted another spooktacular Boo Bingo night! Costumes, laughter, and friendly competition filled the evening, with contests for kids and adults, exciting raffle prizes, and plenty of Halloween spirit. A heartfelt thank-you to our veterans and community members for coming together to make it a frightfully fun and meaningful celebration.

Newspaper Article: Local Students Represent Alameda at California Boys and Girls State

Alameda students ran for elected positions and passed legislation in state government this summer—mock state government, that is. Alameda student delegates shared their experience at California Boys and Girls State, a summer program for high school students, at the American Legion Post 647 meeting on August 13.

Ceremony for Boys & Girls State Winners

The 86th Session of American Legion California Coed Boys & Girls State was held on the campus of California State University, Sacramento from June 21-28, 2025. The American Legion California Coed Boys & Girls State Program offers a hands-on, realistic experience in civic responsibility to high school students prior to entering their senior year of high school. As our leaders of tomorrow, we attempt to instill in them the privileges and duties of American citizenship.

People included: City of Alameda Officials: Mayor Liz Ashcroft and Councilwoman Tracy Jensen. High School Students: Ella Edgelow and Shion Koga Vean (from Alameda High School), Taye Ohh and Matan Antebt (from Encinal High School) Mateo Guimet Keeney (from Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School) and Ella Edgelow and Shion Koga Vean (from Alameda High School). Post 647 Members: Cdr Kurt Winkowski, Greg Owens, Jack McIlvain, Joe LoParo, Sam Moriana, Erine Alvair and Ed Jacobsen.

Oratorical Contest in Clovis

In a very, very close contest our Sylvie Karlstand from SJND placed 2nd in the American Legion California State High School Oratorical Contest. She received a check for $2,000 for placing 2nd. Ed Jacobsen and Greg Owens made the trek to Clovis to witness the event.

Oratorical Contest - Area 2 Level in Palo Alto

Several members of Post 647 drove to Palo Alto to show their support for Sylvie as she competed at the Area 2 level in Palo Alto. This was the third level and Sylvie once again placed first in the U.S. Constitution Oratorical competition. Please join us in a warm congratulations and wish her luck as she progresses to the State level competition.

Post 647 Makes Donation to the Alameda High School Music Program

Greg Owens and Joe LoParo from Post 647, donated 11 musical instrument cases to the music program at Alameda High School. It was expressed that they are always in need of instrument cases as they are often the first to reach the end of serviceability before the instrument.

Newspaper Article: Veterans Donate $5K to AHS Band for New York Trip

On Friday, April 5, 2024, a group of veterans presented the Alameda High School band with a check for $5,000 to help with funding for an upcoming competition in New York. When Vietnam and American Legion Post 647 veteran Joe LoParo learned from AHS band teacher Tyra Cable that the group of students had been fervently fundraising for the April 11 trip, he knew his network of veterans groups would want to help.

Memorial Day Ceremony at Alameda Veterans Memorial Park

The community came together at Alameda Veterans Memorial Park to honor those who have served during the Memorial Day Ceremony. Members of American Legion Post 647 proudly carried a wreath of flowers, paying tribute to fallen heroes, while elected officials and community members joined in remembrance and reflection. The ceremony was a meaningful occasion to celebrate service, sacrifice, and community spirit.
